How does the brain use food for energy?

We drink coffee in the morning to wake up instead of eating a proper breakfast, we drink cola with lunch for a pick-me-up, we get large doses of mate, guarana and caffeine when working late. Why do we have all of these stimulants yet feel exhausted by the end of the day?

The brain is an energy-hungry organ. Despite comprising only 2 percent of the body’s weight, the brain gobbles up more than 20 percent of daily energy intake. Because the brain demands such high amounts of energy, the foods we consume greatly affect brain function, including everything from learning and memory to emotions. You may be surprised, but coffee, cola and other stimulants do not supply the energy.
When we push the gas in a car – we expect the car to move forward, but not because of the pedal. A car moves due to the fuel and engine, only managed by pedal. Imagine how far a car could go without the fuel?

Glucose is the primary source of energy for brain. Your body gets glucose as the result of carbohydrates and protein digestion. So wise folks have heavy breakfasts to fill themselves with energy in advance.
I wish I become wise someday… These days, when I need an energy boost, I crave for chocolate, snacks, candies with sugary drinks, turning my brain into a sugar driven machine!

In other words, the intellectually intensive professions without proper food discipline doom us to feed the brain with towers of sugar every day.

Should we expect side effects?

Sure, large-scale studies have shown that the more high-glycemic foods (those short carbs that quickly digested and increase glucose levels in blood) a person consumes, the higher his risk for becoming obese and for developing diabetes and heart disease.

It is a medically known fact that ketones can provide as much as 70%
of the brain’s energy needs.
To get this affect in real life we need
to lower carbs and increase fat. In other words, we need to feed
ourselves with fat.

When fat is broken down by the liver, glycerol and fatty acid molecules are released. The fatty acid is broken down further, in a process called ketogenesis, and a ketone body called acetoacetate is produced.

After that brain can supplement glucose as the principal energy substrate with ketone bodies.

The ketogenic diet, initially described by Hugh Conklin, a Michigan pediatrician, has been used for the treatment of medically refractory childhood epilepsy since the 1920s. In medicine they do full replacement of glucose on ketones.

That means for us that getting ketones instead of glucose our brain will function with same capacity, but without possible health issues.

But eating fat is gross! Initiation of the ketogenic diet is preceded by a 24- to 48-hour fast.

The ketogenic diet includes 80% fat, 15% protein, and 5% carbohydrate. Effect of full replacement glucose to ketones will occur on the third day. If the diet was disrupted the process should be done form the beginning. Very impractical.

No wonder, scientists
started to look around
for a more effective method:

  • First, in 1960s, it was discovered that medium chain triglycerides (MCTs, type of fat) produce more ketone bodies per unit of energy than normal dietary fats which are mostly long-chain triglycerides (LCT, another type of fat). That means that now you can eat less fat and more protein to get the same effect.
  • Second, because of the shorter chain length of the fatty acids, MCTs are rapidly broken down and converted into fuel for immediate use by organs and muscles. That means you can get your energy ready to work at the same time as you finish your cup of coffee.
  • Third, the fact that accelerated metabolic conversion does not leave a chance for MCT to be stored as fat made the ketogenic diet hyper popular among people loosing weight.

Personal experiment

We decided to set an experiment to measure Glucose and Ketone level before and after drinking BRAIDY and see the difference between male and female reaction. It was interesting to observe how will change our feelings and state of mind depending on the level of Ketones.

I'm lazy and I hate exercising in the morning. To feel awake
in the morning, I drink coffee with 5 spoons of sugar (yes,
I have a very bad sweet tooth) instead of breakfast and
morning exercises. That’s why I was extremely interested
in Ketones effect on my mind and body.

It’s usual routine for me to skip breakfast
and go straight to the notebook.

Being very similar in our routine of the day,
we went step by step:

WORK. Usually after lunch (especially without breakfast) my body and brain felt sleepy, as all energy was given to my stomach to deal with the food. All Carbs need to be processed and they go long way until my brain will feel energy again. (remember LCT circle). In this case the same with LCT. But I boost myself with instant MCT energy through Coffee with Braidy milk. That was a big difference. While my body deal with the food – my brain active and ready to work, as it got all needed energy from ketones. And I could say – that felt amazing! I was actually energetic and awake during first hour after the lunch.

WORK. Normally I feel tired after eating. Some explanations: 1. Eating too much refined carbohydrate induces sugar spikes and crashes. 2. Digestion requires more blood flow to the stomach, hence less blood to the brain, which makes me feel sleepy. After Lunch I decided to drink my usual cup of coffee but followed by glass of chilled Braidy Milk. Coffee boosted my energy, milk calmed down my overexcitement.
